Opportunities to be part of Enviroschools in the Manawatū – Whanganui region

Expressions of interest are being sought for the following contract roles starting from early July 2022, with Horizons Regional Council.

  • Early Childhood Education (ECE) Enviroschools Facilitator
  • Secondary/Intermediate School Enviroschools Facilitator
  • Tararua Enviroschools Facilitator

Horizons Regional Council has three contract opportunities for those with strong relationship building skills to assist schools and early childhood centres with their sustainability journeys through the Enviroschools programme. Much of this support typically occurs in term time but you must be available to meet with schools/centres after hours.

 ECE Enviroschools Facilitator

  • 16 hours per week supporting Enviroschools in Palmerston North, Manawatū, Rangitīkei and Whanganui.
  • Experience of working in the early childhood sector is preferred.

Secondary / Intermediate School Facilitator

  • 16 hours per week supporting Enviroschools in Palmerston North, Manawatū, Rangitīkei and Whanganui.
  • Experience in working within the secondary sector is preferred as it is envisaged that this person would also support Horizons’ Enviroschools Regional Leader to develop and implement a regional secondary Enviroschools strategy.

Tararua Enviroschools Facilitator

  • 5 hours per week supporting Enviroschools across all education school levels in Tararua district.
  • There is room to grow this role with the addition of new Enviroschools.

Preference is given to those living in the districts indicated above. We are also open to combining a number of these contracts for someone with the right experience.

The Person

The Facilitation role involves working with schools and early childhood centres that are participating in the Enviroschools Programme. This role involves guiding, motivating and advising on their journey towards creating a sustainable school community.

Ideally, the contractor will:

  • Have experience with a holistic approach to environmental education. Including knowledge and understanding of the key concepts and practices of sustainability, and experience of action-learning and genuine student participation, and how this operates in schools.
  • Understand school systems: Experience of how schools/ECE’s operate, including knowledge of the formal curriculum.  Teaching qualifications and experience would be an advantage.
  • Enjoy working in a team and comfortable with a range of communication styles. Inclusive style of working that brings people together and empowers others.  Confident facilitating both adults and students through a process of change. Ability to convey ideas to a wide audience. Excellent written and oral skills.
  • Be a creative thinker.  Ability to come up with innovative ideas for supporting schools to integrate the programme into the whole of school life.  A practical approach and ability to help schools set their own priorities.
  • Have excellent organisational skills including event management, administration and computer skills.
  • Be enthusiastic and dedicated.  A personal commitment to environmental issues and the principles of sustainability. A willingness to work in an environment concerned with bringing about change and the flexibility needed to work in such an environment. A reflective role model, learning and assessing their own practice and lifestyle.
  • Be self-motivated and able to work independently.
