Tāmaki Makaurau/ Auckland Senior Advisor Enviroschools

Auckland Council Sustainability Initiatives team has an opportunity for a Senior Advisor Enviroschools to join a friendly team who are passionate about achieving tangible sustainability outcomes in Tāmaki Makaurau!

This exciting opportunity is to work closely with Auckland schools and their communities and help us support and build new and innovative sustainability initiatives through student-led action. You will engage with early childhood education (ECE) centres, and schools to embrace Māori world views with the purpose of fostering kaitiakitanga in our community.

Enviroschools is a national action-based education programme where children and young people plan, design and implement sustainability projects and become catalysts for change. Nationally, Enviroschools is supported by Toimata Foundation. Regionally in Tāmaki Makaurau, the Sustainable Schools team in partnership with the region’s three Kindergarten Associations deliver Enviroschools. This role will include the provision of strategic advice, programme guidance on education for sustainability and leadership in the design and delivery of Enviroschools for the team and unit towards the aim of growing a regional network of schools, ECE centres and their communities that are committed to sustainability.

As a senior team member, you will work with the Team Manager to deliver and implement Sustainable Schools outcomes. This includes ensuring progress towards the high-level strategic outcomes for the region, namely:

  • The Enviroschools Kaupapa reaches a wide and diverse network
  • Strong examples of sustainable practices and approaches are developed in schools and centres throughout the network
  • Schools and centres collaborate in their sustainability journeys, inspiring and motivating one-another
  • Deliver Māori outcomes through creating sustainable communities

You will work to deliver on relevant strategies and plans, in particular local board plans, the Auckland Plan and the Māori Plan for Tāmaki Makaurau through working collaboratively across council, agencies, communities, education providers and the education for the sustainability sector. The role also contributes to the programme at a national level.

For this role, we are looking for a person with a commitment to the environment and sustainability, and experience in bringing about positive change in communities.  These could be experienced teachers, facilitators or sustainability champions who have proven leadership skills.

You will be resilient, adaptable, positive and relish engaging and enabling communities! You’ll also be open-minded and customer-focused; inspiring schools, ECE centres and community partners to work together to promote and commit to sustainable communities

We will be looking for experience in:

  • Big picture thinker who operates strategically.
  • Well-developed team support and management skills with an inclusive style of working that bring people together.
  • A personal connection with the kaupapa of Enviroschools and a commitment to sustainable living.
  • Knowledge and understanding of tikanga Māori with good te reo Māori pronunciation.
  • Proven success in developing and maintaining collaborative relationships across multiple organisations.
  • Pragmatic, adaptable and comfortable with the shared leadership approach.
  • Highly developed communications skills both written and spoken.  Confidence and capability in both English and Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga settings.  Able to navigate culturally diverse settings.
  • Understanding of the NZ Curriculum and/or Te Whāriki.
  • Ability to take a strategic approach to communications and convey ideas to a diverse range of audiences.
  • Financial management skills.

The Sustainability Initiatives group works with schools and their communities to support and deliver education for sustainability programmes and experiences.
