Marewa School celebrated a significant milestone reflecting on their mahi as an Enviroschool on September 4th, 2024. This was celebrated with a special gathering, bringing together members of the kura whānau, councillors from Te Kaunihera o Ahuriri – Napier City Council and Te Kaunihera ā-rohe o te Matau-a-Māui – Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, and the Napier Mayor Kirsten Wise.

The student Enviro Warriors led a heartfelt mihi whakatau to welcome guests. This was followed by a presentation showcasing the school’s amazing achievements through their Enviroschools journey. The school’s māra kai provided delicious kai for guests to enjoy, while a symbolic rākau, with leaves representing the Enviroschools Guiding Principles/ ngā Mātāpono was on display to share the different ways they have learnt about and taken action towards a sustainable community.
After a collaborative session with the Enviro Warriors focused on what the Enviroschools Guiding Principles looked and felt like in their school, they proudly raised the Enviroschools flag, signifying their pride and recommitment to the kaupapa.

This accomplishment is a testament to the dedication and hard work of Marewa School ākonga, Enviro Warriors, kaiako, Jennifer Whyman (Enviroschools lead teacher), Lori Bennison (Board of Trustees presiding member), Chris Meynell (tumuaki) and the kura whānau.
As the Māori proverb goes, “Itiiti rearea, teitei kahikatea ka taea” – Although the rearea (bellbird) is small, it can ascend the lofty heights of the kahikatea tree.
Marewa School’s conscious efforts to increase the depth and breadth of the Enviroschools kaupapa through school life comes about through a collective effort and commitment to environmental sustainability from the whole school community. Ka rawe te mahi ngātahi!
