Karamea Area School’s Mural Shines

| By Brett Mawson, Enviroschools and Sustainability Leader, Karamea Area School

A year in the making!!

All the planning and beginning of the artwork for this amazing mural, including the edge borders, was done predominantly by Year 10 and some Year 9 students at the start of the year (Eliza Doherty, Harriet Young, Shea Chalmers-Mawson, Odin O’Dwyer, Alfie Murton, Sebbie Jones-Klaver, Mikah Leckey, Tilly Macmillan, Diva Murray and Oliver Hansen Higgs).

The remainder of the year went into adding and adding and adding, more colour, more details, more students and staff.

The completed mural far exceeded expectations. It is a true representation of everything that both the Enviroschools Kaupapa and Karamea Area School’s pedagogies stand for. It includes speciality community input (thanks to Stu Reid), integrated curriculum through the arts programme, provided student empowerment by representing every student and staff member in the school, as well as a visual representation of what students believed the school and environment meant to them.

Brett, you are amazing. Your love, support, and dedication to your role as the Lead Enviroschools Kaiako is truly inspiring. You’ve empowered these students not only in their artistic capabilities but also in celebrating the unique diversity they bring to the school community. You have upheld their mana throughout the process and helped them understand how important each and every one of them is at Karamea Area School. – Laura Neale, Enviroschools Facilitator

Karamea Area School’s values via PB4L (positive behaviour for learning) are depicted proudly on the top border.

One needs to look very closely at the amount of detail and information, the connections to the local environment and what is valued in our community.

Karamea Area School’s completed mural

Each teacher and student has contributed to the mural, capturing their unique personality and how they shine within the school. This project has been a true labour of love over the past year and now hangs proudly in the reception area as the first thing people see when they walk in.

It’s special, inspiring, and absolutely worth celebrating.

The “boys”, Stu Reid, Sean Palmer and Brett Mawson, carefully struggle to mount the mural which is 3m x 1.6m for reception.
