Educator and Enviroschools Facilitator – Tairāwhiti, full-time

Mō te tūranga | About the position

As the Educator & Enviroschools Facilitator, you’ll help primary schools, preschools, kindergartens, and secondary schools in the Tairāwhiti region implement the Enviroschools programme by working closely with teachers and students. You’ll focus on teaching kids about the environment using the five Enviroschools guiding principles, Empowered Learners, Learning for Sustainability, Te Ao Māori, Respect for Diversity and Sustainable Communities.

You’ll recognise the importance of the role as a Treaty partner and understand how that underpins Gisborne District Council’s work.

Ngā Mahi ngā Takohanga Matua rānei | Duties include:

  • Facilitate the Enviroschools Programme through participating schools, Kura and ECE centres. Encourage and support the school/ centre to identify and strengthen community partnerships. Highlight opportunities for the school to make links with local programmes, people and resources.
  • Maintain regular and open communication with the Enviroschools Regional Coordinator. Develop peer support relationships with other facilitators. Attend scheduled Regional Enviroschools meetings. Support the Regional Coordinator with reporting to funding agencies.
  • Maintain functional relationships both internally and externally – including the media, contract holders, waste industry, schools, other environmental education providers, community and sector groups, general public and residents.
  • Monitor and report on educational programme effectiveness and implementation

Ngā Pūkenga me Ngā Wheako e Hiahia ana | Skills and experience required:

    • Relevant tertiary or NZQA level 7 qualification in teaching and education or three+ years related experience.
    • Understanding and knowledge of methods to achieve effective communication and influence different audiences.
    • Understanding of Waste Management and Waste Minimisation practices in NZ (desirable).
    • Experience working with community groups, schools.
    • Commitment to good environmental outcomes.
    • A current full Driver’s Licence.
