Wairoa Kindergarten – working together towards a sustainable community

October 7, 2020

Wairoa Kindergarten recently reflected on their Enviroschools journey and everyone agreed that they aligned to the silver statement with ample evidence showing how tamariki and their whānau are being supported by staff at their centre towards a sustainable community.

Wairoa Kindergarten are the first early childhood centre in the Hawke’s Bay Region to achieve this status. The kindergarten has come a long way since reflecting at bronze level in 2012.

“We are really committed to sustainability because if we teach the tamariki at this age to look after Papatūānuku, they really carry it with them, and it becomes something that they just do.” –  Head teacher, Linda Ojala

The team at Wairoa Kindergarten also understand the need to continue striving for a more sustainable community – not only continue what they are doing in some areas but striving to bring the whole community together through the context of sustainability. They hope they will be in a position to reflect at Green-Gold in 2 or 3 years.
