Kia ora from Pembroke Primary School in Stratford, Taranaki, the little school under the shadow of Taranaki Maunga!
In Term 2 this year, Pembroke School’s inquiry topic was financial literacy, and it culminated something big: a whole-school Enviro Market Day with an environmental twist.
The challenge? No ordering from international websites. Everything had to be *environmentally friendly, handmade, upcycled, or locally sourced*.
Here’s how we got there:
- 1.We started with an amazing Environmental Expo in our hall, hosted by amazing Enviroschools facilitator Gwenda from Taranaki Regional Council.
- 2.Then came whole-school tuakana-teina lessons on kaitiakitanga, data collection, market research, problem-solving, and customer service.
- Finally, the big day! 25+ student-run stalls for our school of 86. Parents and our local community also came along to shop, play games, and enjoy home made kai.
This fantastic learning process followed the Enviroschools Action Learning Cycle process and showed the Guiding Principles in action – Empowered Learners, Learning for Sustainability, Honouring te ao Māori, Respect for Diversity, and Sustainable Communities, ka rawe koutou!
All products were made or produced by our tamariki, including:
– Beeswax wraps
– Tin can table pots
– Bookmarks from old stamps
– Bracelets from recycled wool, fabric, nuts + bolts
– Wheat bags + hand-decorated rocks
– T-shirt bags
– Hair accessories
– Fabric keyrings
– Homemade bath salts
