In mid July 2026, the Enviroschools regional teams from across Te Waipounamu gathered in Ōtautahi Christchurch for the South Island Facilitator Hui – two days of learning, connection and collaboration.
Hosted at the beautiful Sumner Surf Life Saving Club, the hui brought together 26 Facilitators and Regional Coordinators from across the South Island. The purpose was to strengthen relationships, share regional kaupapa, build peer coaching capability, and engage with Toimata updates. The Waitaha team, led by Zoe Watson, warmly welcomed everyone into the space, creating a strong sense of manaakitanga and connection from the outset.

One of the standout sessions was the peer coaching PLD facilitated by the New Zealand Coaching & Mentoring Centre, with participants leaving equipped with practical tools to strengthen professional learning and support one another in their facilitation practice. Annie MacDonald also facilitated an engaging session exploring personality, communication and ways of working effectively within teams, providing valuable opportunities for reflection and discussion. The regional sharing session was a major highlight, providing an opportunity to celebrate the diverse and inspiring mahi taking place across Te Waipounamu, share ideas and learn from one another.

The Italian cooking experience created the perfect opportunity for whakawhanaungatanga, with plenty of laughter, great food and even some dancing – strengthening connections across the South Island network.
The hui was a fantastic success, with everyone leaving feeling inspired, connected and energised to take their learnings back to their respective regions. Ka mihi nui koutou katoa for the energy and enthusiasm everyone brought with them, which helped create such a memorable hui.
