Food Forest a Place for Kai and Tamariki to Grow

“Tamariki tending their māra kai (garden)”

Arataki Kindergarten’s food forest garden is continuing to provide rich opportunities for childrens’ learning, as well as kindergarten, whānau, and community learning partnerships.

The kindergarten has families coming in regularly to help in the food forest and the children love to get on board to help. The forest is enriched with compost established with food scraps at the kindergarten, and they use their own worm farm juice to help their plants thrive.

The growing plant life has also attracted increasing numbers of bugs and insects, and there is endless supply of new insect life creating homes amongst the plants. This has really sparked the interest of the tamariki, and they are excited to explore, discover, and discuss all the interesting things they notice in the garden.
